"Kaanta laga" fame Shefali Jariwala passes away at 42; Cardiac arrest suspected
One of Kolkata's most vital flyovers, the Vidyapati Bridge, commonly known as the Sealdah Flyover, has been deemed dilapidated due to age, prompting urgent calls for repair. A recent health test report highlighted significant issues with the flyover's condition, necessitating immediate improvements. However, the presence of a major market beneath the flyover has delayed repair efforts. To address these challenges, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) will conduct a joint inspection on Tuesday. Key officials and market representatives will explore solutions to proceed with the renovation work without severely disrupting the market.
Top KMDA officials emphasized the need for the long-overdue renovation to prevent a potential disaster akin to the Majherhat Bridge collapse in 2018. The renovation is expected to cost approximately Rs 15 crore, covering the reinforcement of pillars and the reconstruction of critical parts of the bridge. Plans include moving about a thousand market shops temporarily, which poses significant challenges for shop owners and employees. The KMC and KMDA aim to address these issues to ensure public safety while minimizing disruption to local businesses.
